A handmade table cloth, made with parachute string

A beautiful artifact uncovered in Crawley
By John Cheves

The photographs below show a wonderful handmade table cloth made entirely from parachute string. it was made by Monica Rice (nee Phelps) and was brought to Heritage Plus in Crawley by her niece Eileen Barber (nee Bishop).

Eileen's Aunt who worked for the Land Army in the Crawley area during World War Two was clearly a very talented and resourceful woman who learned to make use of whatever materials were at hand (we also saw a wonderful table cloth made from sugar bags), and to create something beautiful from them.
